Using an email address as the username

Your forum users cannot create a new account with an email address as their username. This is because the usernames are publicly displayed on the forum. Publicly displaying email addresses would be a security risk and would result in spammers collecting those email addresses to send spam emails.

Users can still log in to your forum using their email address or username.

If you have set up single sign on with your website, an email address can be used as the username. This is necessary since some websites only use email addresses for log in and don't have any username which the user has chosen. In this case, pass in a "name" parameter with the single sign on request. The user's name will be shown everywhere on the forum instead of their username. If no name is provided, the part of their email address before the @ symbol will be shown everywhere on the forum. You can then optionally ask users to change their username.
