What's the difference between messages and the instant messenger?

The difference between messages and the instant messenger is that the instant messenger is meant for a live chat at that moment while messages are meant for a conversation that isn’t live and happens over time.

The instant messenger is similar to live chat and messages is similar to email.

Instant messenger messages arrive instantly while both users are online, and the history isn’t saved. If one of the users leaves the forum, the conversation can’t continue.

Messages is not instant. One of the users can be offline during the conversation. The conversation is stored and can continue over a long period of time.
