Is her bad leg wrapped or bandaged in any way? Just wondering if that's the reason for her goofy walk. It definately wouldn't be the first time I've seen a horse do some strange things when they've got any type of wrap or bandage on.

Joni, just wanted to let you know that we haven't received any pictures.

Joni, I wanted to let you know that we received the pictures in the mail.  Those are some of the most graphic pictures I have ever seen and I am surprised that this horse pulled through this injury.  Scott is going to scan the pictures later on and share them.  Thank you for sharing this learning experience with us all.

I am posting these pictures for the person who is caring for this horse. Please be aware that they are very graphic and not for everyone. They are in order as the horse has been healing and I will try to keep them in order here on this post.

OMG!!!  To read about it was one thing, but to actually see the injury...I don't think that I have ever seen anything so horrible!  I am soooo amazed at the healing progress.  I would never have thought in a million years that the leg - and horse for that matter - could be saved.  Truly a miracle I'd say!

I loved getting to that last picture!  Seeing such a positive end result is always an uplifting thing.

I am totally shocked at the pictures, & it is amazing that she even SURVIVED whatever caused this... OMG! You have done a spectacular job with t his horse. Isure hope that it heals like it should, and that there are no after effects. Like I said, YOU are doing a wonderful job, and she is such a beautiful horse... My prayers are with you, and I sure hope that she can't get this bandage OFF....I can't get over these pictures, which I might add, say a 1000 words...good LUCK..

Wow!  That is really all I can say.  I don't know if I would have had the guts to even consider trying to save the horse.  I absolutely commend you and your family!

Joni you are my hero.  What incredible dedication you have and guts to take this on in the first place.  It is amazing that this horse didn't bleed to death from the initial injury.  Thank you for what you have done.

WOW.  That's all that comes to mind is wow.  I had no idea that anything could come back from an injury like that.  None at all.  Thank you for sharing this experience with us, and bigtime credit to you for sticking with it.  You weren't kidding when you described it.  I'm speechless...  Your vet deserves some props too.

Now that I've picked my mouth up from the floor, all I can say is holy cow  you've got guts taking that one on! I've read all your descriptions, but I never pictured anything close to that!!!! God bless you for taking the time, effort, and energy to help her. I'm normally unflappable as far as "graphic" goes, but my stomach is turning looking at this one. Good luck with her.

WOW...I can't believe a horse could survive an injury like that. Kudos to Joni for her brave decision to try to mend this horse with that incredible leg injury. I couldn't believe my eyes looking at the bone in that first picture. I had to go back through the threads to read about how she got injured. You are an incredible horseperson Joni to help out this poor mare. If only the world had more compassionate, selfless people like you in it. Keep posting on her progress.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even know what to say. To think that an injury of that magnatude could even come close to healing. Truely amazing. Thank you for posting the pictures so we can all see what lots of TLC, patience and prayers can do. Thank you for helping this girl!!!!

That was WAY worse than what I had imagined. I can't believe she survived either. Joni, you have an incredible heart to not give up on this horse. You deserve something...a hug, a pat on the back, a beer, I don't know, but your dedication is amazing.

I have never seen anything that bad before, holly cow I've gotta give you alot of credit for doing what you did for this horse!  Thanks for sharing her story and the pictures.  Does your vet think she can fully recover and be sound someday?

Joni - wow, she is one lucky girl that she hasnt gotten a bone infection & is healing like she is!  Kudos to you & your vet clinic for such great care!

Meanwhile, she may be walking funny because after all this her tendons & muscles will contract from lack of use.  If she isnt walking fully on it, that has allowed her tendons to shorten up making it difficult for her leg to bend & move properly.  Once she's healed up good it will take alot of physical therapy to get that walk back to normal - or as normal as that type of injury will allow.  She may very well be permanently handicapped/lame from this.

You are an angel on earth.
As others stated, it has been amazing to read, but the photos made me shake with wonder that you and your vet could pull her through after so much damage. I had no idea a horse could go through such trama and have regrowth like that.

I am glad that the pictures got there. Thank you so much Scott and Karen for putting them on. I have seen them a million times and have watched her heal up but i am crying like a baby looking at those pictures. I just wanted all of you to see what happen and that it may be REALLY REALLY bad but it's not always bad enough to end it. I bet some of you thought I was full of crap, but now you can see what I was talking about. She is still walking funny and the vet said that she has pulled a muscle up by her stifle. So far she still has good blood flow and nothing is broken (GOD BLESS) so she is still doing good as far as Doc White is concerned. He said she still has a chance to make a full come back and be a light riding horse, but I'm not sure she will ever have to work for a living....I think she has done enough.  She runs around the round pen when she is out. I don't mean trot, I mean run. Runnin Fartin Buckin Kickn. Thats how she pulled her muscle. Up until she pulled it you couldn't tell she was hurt. (well except the vet wrap from hock to hoof) THANKS TO EVERYONE for the help so far, and the help I'm sure I will still be asking for in the future.  P.S. Equioxx is awesome stuff, thanks a million to the person who mentioned it

I know someone wondered how this happen to her so will tell what we think happen again real fast. She was turned out in a big pasture with another mare 2 geldings and a stud colt. The stud horse went to chasing her and backed her into the barbed wire fence at which point she got tangled and freaked out. (purely guessing from looking at the spot it happen) she had to of gotten knocked all the way to the ground and twisted back up in the rest of the wire. The fence had tail hair all over it and chunks of dried meat. the spot on the ground had kick marks all over it from her trying to get up. Ironic thing is that stud horse licked her leg when he ran down to her the day we found her, and the vet said that may have been what saved her from a bone infection. Very happy to report that she has come in heat again!!! Thanks again to all!

Joni...I for one never thoght you were full of crap, just didn't quite get the correct "mental picture". I was thinking about a 3" gash on her leg, but WOW. Thanks for sharing the pictures. They are gross, but it was a good learning experience for all, and another "in your face" lesson about the dangers of barbed wire.

Joni, my jaw is still on the ground.  I just don't know what to say.  Thank you would be starters.  I'm totally in awe of the work you've put into this.  I'm totally amazed at the progress.  I think you have one he11 of a vet to help you through this.  I think, no, I know, you are one special person to have helped this horse.  Thank you for such a great learning lesson.

OMG...I don't know what I would've done if I would've found her like that.  I probably would've freaked out and been out of controll.  So proud of you for what you have done for this poor horse.  Keep us posted on her recovery.
