First.. I'd like  to say.. (((( Sad ))))

My child was on risperidone at a very young age.... and the side effects were real bad..

I wish I new more back then about this drug because she got purple spots on her body started going ridged holding arms and feet up in the air while laying down her behavior got far worse it just...

She was agitated and indistress after trying a few different kinds of meds back then for her following that... we gave up on seeing this doctor because he would not listen to us... or our concerns....

We just needed some sleep to deal with her behavior as well as she needed a goodnights sleep as well... because she hardly slept... Ever.. back then....

Not theses heavy drugs that didn'twork on her... we explained to the DR...... after it was not working.... the meds... and he would not listen to us..

Perscribing a light weight drug to help her sleep better..

No.. He'd rather prescribe theses kind of drugs for her....

Still. After all we knew...

So we went else where to look for help....

So on this thread.. I'm going to post updates for autistic child and thoses on what I .... and many others call the spectrum .....

Thats what this threads about....

But resperidone was a real bad thing to do for her thought she was only on it a short length of time..

As a parent.. One tends to allways beat themselves up for the choices we make from the advice that we get..

I wish she was never on it and it just galls me to think a heavy duty drug like that could have meesed her up inside and thou I did not have H or T at the time...

But... because of my expirences with hyperacusis and tinnitus..... which followed all thoses events..

Who knows what the medications might have done to her..... inside????

Thats what upsets me so much as a parent...

You have no idea how I totally feel unless you are a parent yourself..

Parents feel more deeply about theses things..

O.K maybe aunts and uncles too !!!!

But this is what this thread will be about....

Heres the latest update..

FDA Approves Anti-Psychotic Drug Risperidone for Use in Children Diagnosed with Autism
National Autism Association urges parents and health care providers to carefully research side effects

Nixa, MO - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the anti-psychotic drug Risperidone (trade name Risperdal) earlier this month for use among children diagnosed with autism, much to the concern of parents familiar with the drug’s side effect profile. Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen, Risperdal sales figures were over $3 billion in 2005. The FDA has approved the drug for pediatric use despite the fact that the agency issued a warning letter to Janssen in 2004 saying that the company had omitted information in product literature regarding hypoglycemia and diabetes, and had made misleading claims that Risperdal is safer than other drugs in the same category.

Documented potential side effects of Risperidone include lactation both in girls and boys, weight gain, and development of the often irreversible movement disorder tardive dyskinesia. “Any medication that can induce lactation in boys is clearly a dangerous drug, and in my opinion should only be used when all avenues of biomedical treatments have been exhausted,” said National Autism Association executive director Rita Shreffler. “Parents are faced with extremely tough decisions when it comes to medicating their children, and extra caution should be used with Risperdal in particular given what we know about it.”

The behavioral symptoms associated with autism are often due to undiagnosed medical issues including heavy metal toxicity, abdominal pain, constipation, parasites and food allergies. Many of these issues can be relieved by more benign interventions to address the cause of the behaviors, rather than masking them with drugs.

“Medical treatments are working backwards,” said NAA president Wendy Fournier. “We're prescribed pills for a headache without addressing the cause of the headache. We must start treating the cause of medical illnesses, not just covering up symptoms, especially when it comes to the complex biomedical issues of children with autism.”

Another Johnson & Johnson’s company, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (OCD), manufactured RhoGAM, a RhoD Immune Globulin given to Rh-negative women during pregnancy and following delivery. RhoGAM exposed fragile, developing fetuses to a bolus dose of mercury-based thimerosal. The neurotoxin was used as a preservative until OCD changed production methods in 2001. Many parents and scientists believe thimerosal to be the leading factor in the increase of neurological injuries such as autism among children.

“It’s ironic that the same company that gave us RhoGAM now stands to further increase profits from a drug that suppresses symptoms of neurological damage consistent with mercury toxicity,” commented Shreffler. “Risperdal does nothing to address the neurological injuries of children diagnosed with autism, and the potential side effects are frightening.”

We know that 1 of 166 children have autism and thats not includeing ADHD ADD ..

and all other children that I would consider to be on the spectrum..

That is alot of children in this country and cannot be overlooked..

But what upset me the most in my research over this issue and that is how I formed my beliefs of now..

That I was allready upset over the issue of mercury in the shots but when I read ' Being one that has suffered thru hyperacusis disorder "...................

And had the flu shot early on in my condition...

Found out what the flu shot contains Thanks To Janice...

What mercury exposure can do to ones auditory system and brain..

Causing abnormality sound sensitivitys, hearing loss, deafness ect....

Effecting the neurons in the brain.....

I just about went stark MAD...... and to find out that we are exposed more then we think we are to this substance...by the air we breath the food we eat things we come into contact with just about blew me away...

And we all know the drill about autistic children that cover their ears to sounds and have hearing problems and 40 percent they say that have hyperacusis ....  it just goes to show..

Well.. It's just not good...... but worth the research I have done..

But this is NOT a thread about that..

Mercury on the hearing.. The auditory system... The brain...

This thread is about ...

Autism...... the latest from a certain widely held viewpoint by many.....

For thoses who want to know whats in the news for many... when it comes to this issue of today....

THE ACIP MEETING IN ATLANTA IS SIX DAYS AWAY!
THIMEROSAL HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE AGENDA
PARTICIPATE IN ‘THE COMMON SENSE CAMPAIGN’

Thimerosal has been added to the ACIP (Advisory Commitee on Immunization Practices) meeting agenda at 4pm on October 25th.

The ACIP Committee needs to hear our stories and how our children have been affected by thimerosal.

It is important to encourage the ACIP committee to recommend that infants, children, and pregnant women only receive thimerosal-free vaccines!

Mercury is still entering the bloodstreams of pregnant women and our children. Now’s our chance to speak up!

Parents are encouraged to attend the meeting and speak to the committee during the public comment periods.  This is a great opportunity to make a statement on how your family has been affected by the decisions of the ACIP.

NAA has created ‘The Common Sense Campaign’ to send to the ACIP committee. To view the ads, scroll to the bottom of the page. Anyone attending the meeting or sending letters to the committee is welcome to print these out and take along as hand-outs or include with letters.

National Autism Association Encourages Parents of Vaccine-Injured Children to Participate in Upcoming ACIP Meeting
Use of mercury in vaccines scheduled for discussion on October 25 in Atlanta

Nixa, MO – The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will meet October 25 and 26 at the CDC in Atlanta. Parents of children injured by the vaccine preservative thimerosal (mercury) plan to attend the meeting to demand that mercury be removed from vaccines, especially from flu shots currently recommended for pregnant women and young children.

This past June, the committee made no recommendations for thimerosal-free flu shots despite numerous requests from parents who traveled from all parts of the country to make statements to committee members. In response to a written request from National Autism Association board member Lyn Redwood, the committee has placed thimerosal on the meeting agenda for Wednesday, October 25. “Our government agencies, including the CDC, have for years shown concern over elevated mercury levels in newborns, yet this committee continues to insist that injecting mercury into pregnant women and infants is safe. This is a mixed message that must be addressed for the sake of our children’s health,” commented Ms. Redwood. “I’m glad the ACIP has placed this critical topic on the agenda so that parents can have a voice in the discussion.”

While thimerosal has been phased out of some vaccines, this form of mercury is still used in some vaccines including most flu shots. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines indicate that the 25 micrograms of mercury contained in thimerosal-preserved flu shots is safe for an adult weighing 550 pounds. A growing number of parents and scientists believe that the increased use of mercury-containing vaccines starting in the late 1980’s has led to the huge rise in autism that now affects one in 166 children in America. “To caution women against eating too much fish during pregnancy while advising them to take a mercury injection sounds ridiculous, yet that is exactly what is happening with the flu shot,” according to Ann Brasher, NAA vice president and grandmother of a mercury-injured ten year old boy. “Getting mercury out of vaccines is the ultimate no-brainer. Making vaccines as safe as possible should be this committee’s first priority.”

The committee consists of 15 experts in fields associated with immunization who have been selected by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to provide advice on immunizations. They develop written recommendations for the routine administration of vaccines to the pediatric and adult populations. ACIP is the only entity in the federal government that makes such recommendations.

Parents are urged to attend the ACIP meeting, or to mail letters to the committee requesting that a recommendation be made to provide only thimerosal-free flu shots to pregnant women and children. Parents can register to attend the meeting by visiting http://www.cdc.gov/nip/acip/dates.htm

Meeting Dates: October 25-26, 2006

CDC Announces New Autism Study as Advocacy Organizations Challenge Agency’s Motivations
Concern among parents over past CDC handling of autism data casts a shadow on future studies

Nixa, MO – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a new study last week regarding the autism epidemic currently plaguing one in 166 children in the U.S. While the CDC has never officially declared autism an epidemic, the agency and the American Academy of Pediatrics released a joint “Autism A.L.A.R.M.” in 2004 which stated that one in six children now suffers from a developmental disorder and/or behavioral problem. This study comes following mounting concerns from parents and scientists that the CDC manipulated relevant vaccine safety data and that the agency may be concealing a connection between vaccines and the huge rise in autism and related disorders in recent years.

“Many parents get nervous when they see ‘autism’ and ‘CDC’ in the same sentence, and for good reason,” commented Claire Bothwell, National Autism Association (NAA) board chair and parent of a vaccine-injured child diagnosed with autism. “The transcripts from the Simpsonwood meeting clearly show that the CDC was well aware of a relationship between mercury in vaccines and neurological disorders in children, yet they did all they could to see that this crucial information remained buried. How can parents ever trust this agency to conduct honest autism research given its past deceit?”

The Simpsonwood transcripts are from a June, 2000 meeting of CDC scientists in Norcross, Georgia. The meeting was held to discuss the results of a study using the CDC’s vaccine safety data base to determine whether thimerosal, a mercury-based vaccine preservative, might be causing injury to young children. The transcripts were obtained by the nonprofit organization SafeMinds through the Freedom of Information Act and are now widely available to concerned parents seeking answers for once-healthy children who regressed into autism following exposure to mercury in vaccines.

Compounding the mistrust of the CDC is the secretive manner in which data for other autism studies has been collected.  Last year, parents in Colorado and Arkansas became aware that the CDC had collected medical and school records of their children without obtaining parental consent. “It’s an outrage that this agency has complete access to any information they want on our children, and parents have no say in the matter whatsoever,” observed Bothwell.

The CDC’s release on the new study doesn’t mention vaccines or mercury, fueling concerns of yet another
smokescreen, steering attention from what many parents consider the most critical factor in the development of autism. “In my opinion, the study will muddy the waters further as they spend millions on anything other than the mercury portion of the equation,” noted NAA board member Laura Bono.

The study includes data collection from cheek swabs and blood and hair sampling. “Even if mercury detection was a research objective, these methods would only be useful for recent exposures. Mercury clears the blood rapidly, settling in the brain and other target organs,” said Bono. “Additionally, the two to five year age range of the children in the study is of concern as the largest mercury exposures are among the older kids. The CDC knows this. Their unwillingness to explore the most plausible causation factor is very telling.”

• Autism is an epidemic in this country. There is no such thing as a genetic epidemic. One in 166 children goes on to be diagnosed with autism, including children in our own District. It is a lifelong affliction for the vast majority with many requiring constant care. However, some with autism are recovering with biomedical treatments. We need to study the biomedical treatments that are working and develop other treatments to help.

• The Combating Autism Act (S. 843) authorizes over $900 million for autism research and services, and would for the first time coordinate Federal efforts into autism research. It also provides the critical oversight needed to make sure NIH and other agencies help the most children in the fastest way possible.

• We are asking for a very public commitment to move the Senate bill (S.843) in November. While we appreciate the need to move the larger NIH Reform bill, autism deserves special attention not expressed in that bill.

• The CAA specifically addresses the link of autism to environmental factors (including vaccines and preservatives) that parents have wanted for so long. For the first time, we have the opportunity to get government dollars directed at this previously neglected area. We won’t rest until we get the help and research our children need and deserve.

• If there is ever a time for politicians and advocacy groups to dictate autism research it is now since autism has not gotten the attention it deserves at NIH.

Autism is an out-of-control epidemic in the U.S. and many other countries.  Just fifteen years ago, autism was an extremely rare disorder, diagnosed in 1 of 10,000 children.  Today, 1 in 166 children are afflicted, with boys 4 times more likely to develop autism than girls. Autism is not solely caused by an incurable genetic defect, it must have a biological or environmental cause (and therefore a cure).  The National Autism Association (NAA) is on the forefront of directly funding scientific research that will yield the most promising and immediate treatments for autism. To help fund our efforts, we are holding a No-Limit Hold 'Em charity poker event on November 2, 2006 at Atlantic City’s Borgata Resort Casino and Spa. The $250 event fee includes entry into the Borgata's nightly $100+$20 Poker Tournament, admission to a private “players lounge” with beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, and a $100 contribution to NAA.  Players will also receive special gifts made possible by donations from corporate sponsors.  Optional overnight accommodations at a special Charity Tournament rate of $129 will be available to players wishing to spend the night at the Borgata in Atlantic City.

A Non-Tournament-Players Package will be available for $130.  This package includes all of the above excluding entry into the tournament - a great option for non-poker-playing spouses and friends who want to join the fun and support the cause.

Documentary filmmakers Don and Julianne King are in the final stages of editing the documentary “Beautiful Son” which is a personal journey of finding answers to help their son who was diagnosed with autism 3 years ago.

The filmmakers are looking for home video footage of children on the spectrum who are struggling. This is not to sensationalize our children but to give an honest perspective of what we know happens behind closed doors. The idea is to educate the general public, many of whom have no idea of the daily struggles of most autistic children and their families.

Unfortunately, the deadline to complete the film is fast approaching and the filmmakers are asking for footage in the next 2-3 weeks. Anyone who has footage shot on any format (digital, mini-HD, mini-dv, high8 or vhs) of their autistic child stimming, or visual representations of severe autism and who will volunteer this footage to be used in a montage in the documentary, please send mini-dv tapes with a signed release to:

LARRY KING TO INTERVIEW FAMILY OF VACCINE INJURED CHILD
The Eve of Battle
By Kent Heckenlively

The war has begun.

On Thursday March 6, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. at the U. S. Federal Courthouse in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Jon Poling, M.D., Ph. D. and his wife Terry, an attorney and nurse, will hold a press conference about the government’s recent concession that “vaccines” (not just thimerosal or the MMR shot), “significantly aggravated” their daughter’s underlying mitochondrial disorder and led to her diagnosis of autism and seizures.  (The seizure part of the equation was conceded on February 22, 2008.)

Later on March 6, Dr. Poling and his wife will be on the Larry King show.
Let me say that again.  The war has begun.

Hannah Poling was normally developing up until her 18 month vaccination and her “mitochondrial disorder” did not appear until after her vaccination.  It is well-known that approximately 75% of mitochondrial disorders are caused by medications such as the drug AZT (for AIDS) or toxins.  It will be the contention of Dr. Poling and his wife that the vaccines also caused her mitochondrial disorder.

The national media is expected to be out in force for the Poling press conference.  I spoke with a source close to the Polings who told me they were also being interviewed for an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  The source told me he expects this story to quickly go national.

From what I’ve been told, the government could not have picked a more credible couple to whom to make their first concession.  Dr. Poling graduated from Boston University with a masters and undergraduate degree in biology and a GPA of 3.90.  He received his M.D. and Ph.D from Georgetown University and did his neurology internship at Johns Hopkins University , Department of Neurology.  Have I already mentioned that the mother, Terry, is an attorney and a nurse?
My source recommended parents stay away from the press conference tomorrow, but that our community should stay tuned for something big in Washington , D.C. at which we might be able to show our support.

My friends, I believe we are on the eve of battle.  I encourage you to use your voices now to call the Larry King show to tell your own stories, send letters of thanks to those news outlets which cover this event, and anything which in your own estimation will help advance our cause.

I don’t know how long the fight will be, but I’m guessing it will be short and bloody.  When the dust clears, I hope we will have not just an admission of this terrible tragedy, but the best minds of medicine working on how to help our children.

That would be the greatest victory.

ATLANTA ACIP MEETING WEEKS AWAY; PARENTS PREPARE TO REQUEST MERCURY-FREE FLU SHOTS

Nixa, MO –  The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will meet in the coming weeks at the CDC in Atlanta. Parents of children injured by the vaccine preservative thimerosal (mercury) plan to attend the meeting.

This past June, the committee made no recommendations for thimerosal-free flu shots despite the pleading requests of parents. This time around, parents are hopeful that the committee will have a change of heart. “Parents have asked the committee to put thimerosal-containing vaccines on the agenda, but the requests have been ignored,” says Scott Bono, father and board member of The National Autism Association.

While public perception holds that ethylmercury thimerosal has been phased out of vaccines, this form of mercury is still used in some specialty vaccines and in most flu shots currently recommended to pregnant women and small children. Bono’s son has repeatedly been diagnosed with mercury poisoning. He sharply regressed after receiving mercury-containing vaccines in the early 90’s. “Even though no one was talking about thimerosal or mercury in the vaccines back then, my wife and I knew right away that there was something within the vaccines that caused a severe regression in our son,” says Bono. “So now that we know specifically what it was, it’s difficult to allow this toxic preservative to needlessly enter the bloodstreams of fetuses and young children.”

Parents are urged to attend the ACIP meeting, or to mail letters to the committee requesting thimerosal be placed on the February agenda, and that a recommendation be made to provide only thimerosal-free flu shots to pregnant women and children. Parents can register to attend the meeting by visiting http://www.cdc.gov/nip/acip/dates.htm.

Meeting Dates: October 25-26, 2006

Frisco, TX – Parents of children with autism will hold a press conference in Richardson on Monday, October 30, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. regarding the status of the Combating Autism Act (Senate Bill 843).

WHO: Families of children with autism

WHAT: Press Conference

WHERE: The Renaissance Hotel at 900 E. Lookout Drive in Richardson

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is increasing in America’s children at epidemic levels. According to the CDC, 1 in 166 children will succumb to an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Recent research indicates that autism is being triggered by an environmental insult. National leaders are calling for our best and brightest researchers to find out what would make ordinarily normal, healthy children regress into autism. There are now more children with autism than several of the leading childhood diseases combined.

This life long, severely debilitating disorder currently affects millions of children across the country; yet legislation that would provide critical help to those children and their families is being held up by several congressional leaders despite the fact that a majority of the House has co-sponsored the bill. Is this politics as usual in Washington? The Combating Autism Act (Senate Bill 843), which has unanimously passed the United States Senate would, among other things, wage a nearly 1 billion dollar war on Autism over the next five years. The Act would attack Autism on a multiple of fronts: much needed public awareness and early identification, funding research to  identify the best medical practices and treatment of Autism, and basic biomedical research. Yet, despite unanimous support in the Senate and over 220 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives, Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., and U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, are refusing to let the House vote on this critical legislation. Their refusal to act is  essentially robbing children with Autism of their voice in the political process.

Come hear parents explain how the Combating Autism Act is essential if we are to rescue an entire generation of children already at risk of being lost forever to this devastating disorder.

Listen as families explain how this legislation will help them meet the tremendous challenges they face by caring for children with Autism. These parents and their children will be gathered in front of the Renaissance Hotel in Richardson, where Speaker Hastert is scheduled to present a key note address at a fundraising event at noon. Families will call on Speaker Hastert and Congressman Barton to stop holding their children hostage to politics and let the House vote on the Combating Autism Act.

National Autism Association Cites Serious Shortcoming in CDC Flu Shot Safety Study
Six-week follow-up called “ridiculously inadequate” by autism advocacy group

Nixa, MO – A study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicating that the influenza vaccine is safe for infants and toddlers is being criticized for the brief six-week follow-up of subjects involved in the study. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nine of the 19 authors admit ties with vaccine makers including Sanofi Pasteur, GlaxoSmithKline, and others.

“Following-up with these children for a mere six weeks is ridiculously inadequate,” according to National Autism Association (NAA) executive director Rita Shreffler. “The neurological injuries that result in diagnoses such as autism do not typically occur immediately after getting shots. Exposures to vaccine toxins such as mercury are cumulative and symptoms of injury may not be apparent for months or even years. Apparently, this is yet another CDC-drug company collaboration to whitewash thimerosal and ensure that flu shots are as profitable as possible, regardless of their long term adverse effects.”

Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative used in most flu shots, including those often received by pregnant women and young children. While some mercury-free flu shots are manufactured each year, the majority contain 25 micrograms of mercury, an amount considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency for an adult weighing 550 pounds. A growing number of scientific studies link mercury exposure in susceptible individuals to the development of neurological injuries such as autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The CDC now recommends the flu vaccine for pregnant women, and annually for children six months through five years of age.

At a meeting of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) last week, thimerosal was not placed on the agenda despite a request from 15 national organizations that the ACIP follow the 2001 Institute of Medicine recommendations that pregnant women, infants, and children receive thimerosal-free vaccines. CDC officials also refused to vote on stating a preference for thimerosal-free vaccines for pregnant women and children.

“Pregnant women and young children shouldn’t be exposed to mercury in any form because of the potential for serious neurological injury,” commented Laura Bono, NAA board member and mother of a vaccine-injured son. “In my opinion, failure to follow-up appropriately with the kids in this study, then based on the incomplete data, promote flu vaccines as ‘safe,’ is irresponsible, giving parents a false sense of security. Predictably, this latest from the CDC does nothing to address the long-term dangers of injecting children with mercury.”

National Autism Association Questions Suggestion that Injected Mercury from Flu Shots is “Safe” for Pregnant Women and Infants

Small scale study in Bangladesh touted as evidence that a known neurotoxin can be safely injected into humans

Nixa, MO - Findings from a small study conducted in Bangladesh are being promoted as proof that the benefits to pregnant women and infants from mercury-containing flu shots outweigh the risks.  Advocacy organizations including the National Autism Association (NAA) today are questioning the wisdom of continuing to promote the injection of mercury through influenza and other vaccines, particularly when the developing brain of a fetus or infant is a factor.

The Bangladesh study involved only 340 women, while a study conducted in the U.S. of 50,000 women and infants over five flu seasons found no difference in those given influenza vaccines and controls for flu or flu-related illnesses. To read the study visit http://nationalautismassociation.org/pdf/Pregfluvaxineffective2004.pdf

According to the Physician’s Desk Reference, the flu vaccine is considered a category C drug.  Drugs in this classification have not undergone animal reproductive studies and should only be administered during pregnancy if the benefit far outweighs the risk.

“It defies all reason that our government agencies continue to tell the public that injecting mercury has no consequences for unborn children, at the same time warning pregnant women not to eat too much fish because of the threat posed by mercury to the developing brain,” commented Laura Bono, NAA board member and mother to a mercury-injured son.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends flu shots for pregnant women and annually for children 6 months through 5 years of age.  Most flu shots contain 25 micrograms of mercury, an amount considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency for an adult weighing 550 pounds.

According to a paper on the ACIP recommendations for pregnant women by F. Edward Yazbak, MD and David Ayoub, MD in the 2006 summer issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons:

  • There is no convincing evidence of the effectiveness of influenza vaccination during this critical period.
  • No studies have adequately assessed the risk of influenza vaccination during pregnancy.
  • Thimerosal, a mercury based preservative present in most flu shots has been implicated in human neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism.
  • The ACIP policy recommendation of routinely administering influenza vaccine during pregnancy is ill advised, unsupported by current scientific literature and should be withdrawn.
  • Use of thimerosal during pregnancy should be contraindicated.

The ACIP’s next meeting is scheduled for October 25 and 26 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.  NAA is encouraging parents to attend the meeting or send letters to the committee urging them to adopt a policy of eliminating thimerosal from vaccines, especially those intended for pregnant women and children.  To register for the meeting, go to http://www.cdc.gov/nip/acip/dates.htm

RESEARCHERS TO GATHER IN LITTLE ROCK FOR REVIEW OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN AUTISM

NATIONAL AUTISM ASSOCIATION APPLAUDS SAFEMINDS COSPONSORSHIP OF FIVE-DAY NEUROTOXICOLOGY CONFERENCE... September 17 2006

Little Rock –  Researchers will gather today in Little Rock, Arkansas for the Neurotoxicity in Development and Aging Conference. The event is co-sponsored by the research group, SafeMinds.

SafeMinds' focus for the conference centers on the recent epidemic increases in the number of children diagnosed with developmental disabilities and autism. Despite data suggesting these disorders are heritable, genetics alone cannot account for their rapid increases over the past decade. With this in mind, scientists are now exploring the links between exposure to environmental toxins such as mercury and the subsequent development of adverse neurological disorders.

Members of the National Autism Association will attend the conference. Laura Bono, parent and board member of the National Autism Association, says a review of the latest data is critical. “Current findings need to take us to the next level of research and treatments for the one in 166 children now diagnosed with autism,” says Bono. “My hope is that the best and the brightest researchers in neurotoxicology will review the data presented at the conference, and choose to steer their research and careers into future treatment options for the children suffering with autism and other neurological disorders.”

Bono added, “With autism rising at epidemic levels, hundreds of scientists are needed to remedy the situation. I’m glad SafeMinds has made this investment in our children.”

Recent research funded by SafeMinds will be presented. The research documents how children diagnosed with autism are more vulnerable to the toxic effects of mercury because their bodies often lack essential chemicals which naturally detoxify and aid in removing toxic metals. These findings suggest that some autistic behaviors may be the result of a neurological manifestation of a metabolic derangement. Furthermore, treatment strategies directed toward correcting specific metabolic imbalances through targeted therapy that safely purges the body of heavy metals may potentially ameliorate some symptoms of autism.

Most Americans Surprised, Concerned that 90 Percent of Flu Shots Contain the Toxin Mercury

Health Officials' Aggressive Flu Shot Campaign May Disregard Safety, According to Survey of 9,000 Americans

74 Percent of Respondents Unaware Flu Shots Contain Mercury, 78 Percent Disagree with CDC About Vaccinating Pregnant Women and Children

PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- As health officials step up their effort to vaccinate Americans against the flu, a new survey suggests serious concerns over the toxin mercury, an ingredient in over 90 percent of this season's flu shot supply. PutChildrenFirst.org, a parent-led organization advocating vaccine safety, commissioned a survey of over 9,000 Americans to learn their plans for getting flu shots, their knowledge of its ingredients, and who they hold responsible for making sure vaccines are safe.

The survey revealed that the overwhelming majority of Americans were unaware that most flu shots contain mercury and that they would refuse a shot with mercury. (See page two for the key findings.)

"More than 75 percent of Americans feel a mercury-containing flu shot should not be given to a pregnant woman or a child, despite recommendations from medical authorities to do just that," said Lisa Handley, a founding parent of PutChildrenFirst.org. Her own son, Jamison, had an adverse reaction to a flu shot containing mercury in 2003. "I know firsthand how life-changing a flu shot with mercury can be, since our son began his regression into autism after his flu shot."

In 1999, government agencies called for the removal of Thimerosal, the mercury-based preservative in most vaccines. Then, in 2001, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated that, "mercury in all of its forms is toxic to the fetus and children, and efforts should be made to reduce exposure to the extent possible to pregnant women and children as well as the general population." Despite these actions, 90 percent of this season's flu vaccines still contain Thimerosal, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are recommending the vaccine for pregnant women and children six months and older.

These recommendations come on the heels of recent studies that reveal new findings about the neurological effects of mercury and question the effectiveness of flu shots. Mercury, the second most toxic element after plutonium, is estimated to be 500 to 1,000 times more toxic than lead.

"A common myth is that Thimerosal is added to vaccines in 'trace' amounts," said Mike Wagnitz, who has over 20 years experience evaluating materials for mercury and is employed as a senior chemist with the University of Wisconsin. "The concentration of mercury in a multi-dose flu vaccine vial is 50,000 parts per billion. To put this in perspective, drinking water cannot exceed 2 parts per billion of mercury, and waste is considered hazardous if it has only 200 parts per billion. Is it really safe then to inject pregnant women, newborns, and infants with levels of mercury 250 times higher than what is legally classified as hazardous waste?"

Agreeing that mercury has no place in vaccines, seven states have passed Thimerosal bans in recent years: California, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, New York, and Washington. California is the first to have implemented the ban for the current flu season, but Governor Schwarzenegger temporarily overturned the ban on November 2 after a shortage of mercury-free flu shots led to pressure from state medical groups.

"Parents need to be informed about all aspects of their children's healthcare, including vaccines," said Deirdre Imus, President and founder of The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center and co-founder and co-director, with husband Don Imus, of The Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer. "It doesn't make common sense to inject Thimerosal, a known neurotoxin, into the bloodstream of our babies."

This fall, two studies were published in leading medical journals admitting that limited data exists to support the effectiveness of flu shots. One study, in the Journal of the American Medical Association, noted that, "there is scant data on the efficacy and effectiveness of influenza vaccine in young children."

"So, not only is the flu shot's effectiveness in doubt, there is plenty of evidence revealing the devastating effects of mercury," said J.B. Handley, Lisa's husband and a founder of PutChildrenFirst.org. "Our health authorities are not being forthcoming about mercury's presence in shots and its toxicity to the nervous system. Our children deserve better."

"With everything we know about the dangers of mercury and the havoc it can wreak on young, developing brains, there is no excuse for any vaccine to contain mercury," said Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN, President of SafeMinds, a nonprofit committed to ending mercury-induced neurological disorders. "The survey reveals that Americans are overwhelmingly in the dark about what is in most flu shots. They do not want a known neurotoxin injected into their children, and they believe Congress and medical professionals must be more vigilant about keeping vaccines safe and mercury-free."

Key findings from the poll, conducted October 27-30 by Zogby International, include:

    * 74 percent of respondents are unaware that most flu shots contain mercury.
* After learning that mercury is an ingredient, 74 percent are less likely to get a flu shot and..
86 percent of parents say they are less likely to get their child a flu shot.
* 78 percent of respondents believe mercury should not be an ingredient in flu shots given to pregnant women and children.
* 73 percent believe the government should warn pregnant women not to get a flu shot if it contains mercury.
* More than 70 percent agree that Congress, doctors and medical groups
(e.g., the American Academy of Pediatrics) should take responsibility for ensuring that vaccines do not contain mercury.
* 80 percent of respondents and 82 percent of parents are willing to pay the $2.50 additional cost for a mercury-free flu shot.

PutChildrenFirst.org is a parent-led initiative advocating vaccine safety and a division of Generation Rescue, a nonprofit organization providing parents with information on the relationship between mercury and its relationship to Autism Spectrum Disorders. Generation Rescue gives parents information to make informed decisions about treatment options and physicians. Generation Rescue is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit founded in 2005.

National Autism Association to Call for New Era of Autism Research at Friday’s IACC Meeting

Data supporting mercury/autism link to be presented at semi-annual autism committee meeting in DC November 12 2006

Washington, DC  – The National Autism Association (NAA) will participate in Friday’s semi-annual meeting of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) with a presentation by NAA Scientific Advisory Board member Jeffrey Bradstreet, MD, titled “The Role of Environmental Factors in the Pathogenesis of Autism: Phenotypes, Lab Markers, Clinical Interventions and Suggested Areas for Research.”

Dr. Bradstreet will update the committee on the recommendations for environmental research into autism based on the proceedings from the August 2005 symposium, “Environmental Factors in Neurodevelopmental  Disorders” held by NAA and SafeMinds through a generous grant from the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

“We look forward to presenting new data that re-confirms the link between environmental toxins and the development of autism,” commented NAA president Wendy Fournier.  “With this promising science, we urge the NIH to move into a new era of productive autism research.”

To meet the demand for an environmental research emphasis, NAA will ask that the IACC broaden its expertise by adding experts in the fields of toxicology, gastroenterology, and neuroimmunology to the Autism Matrix Update Panel.  NAA will also discuss the following:

  • The dire need for autism to be declared an epidemic.
  • The need for funding to be directed towards research that will benefit the most children in the shortest amount of time.
  • The majority of research dollars should be allocated towards environmental contaminants (including vaccines and their preservatives) and their links to neurological disorders.

For years NAA and SafeMinds have pushed for an environmental research agenda, specifically the connection between autism and mercury, often with resistance. “As the latest research has unfolded it has become quite clear that our children are suffering from an environmentally triggered disease,” says parent and NAA board member Laura Bono.  “We hope the research presented to the IACC will change the perception that autism is a genetic, lifelong, and untreatable diagnosis.”

Autism is a National Public Health crisis , affecting over 1.5 million Americans and costing $35 Billion Annually, by 2010 , more people then ever will be liveing with Autism.

Don't Ignore It. Get Informed.

House hold allergies play a big role in increased Autistic Behaviors.

Here is an article that explains where some household allergies can come from in our homes. This is an article that is written in general for allergies but as I have researched I found that allergies greatly affect behaviors in children with autism, with both food and environmental allergies. The problem is they don't have the same symptoms as most people with allergies such as teary eyes, runny nose and sneezing. Our childrens symptoms can range from irritablity, aggressiveness, defiency and sensory overload which causes increased stemming and can include ADHD affects.

Chemical contaminants are infecting the air you breathe in your home sweet home. The culprit may surprise you.

It's chemicals in the clothing you sent to the dry cleaners, the laminated kitchen cabinets, and your beautiful dining room wallpaper. While the Environmental Protection Agency does regulate these contaminants for the outdoors, they can be two to five times higher once you bring them inside your home and close the windows, reports WTOP Radio in Washington, D.C.If you think pollution is only an outdoor problem, think again. Most of us spend over 90 percent of our time indoors--in homes, offices, cars, and stores. Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio reports that the indoor environment usually has higher contaminant levels and provides more immediate and prolonged exposure to pollutants.

Here are the primary contaminators in our homes, according to the EPA:

Dry-cleaned clothes
Contaminant: Perchloroethylene
Effects: Neurological, including nausea, headache, and dizziness.

Laminated wood products, wallpaper, and stain-resistant fabrics
Contaminant: Formaldehyde
Effects: Watery eyes and burning sensations in the eyes, nose and throat. Also, nausea, coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, skin rashes, and allergic reactions.

Synthetic carpets and new furnishings that have been wrapped in plastic
Contaminant: Chemicals such as benzene, styrene, toluene, xylene, and formaldehyde may be in the adhesives and glue strips, the underlay or rug pads, and may have been used to treat the carpet or upholstered furniture for anything from stains to moths.
Effects: Respiratory, as well as watery eyes and burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat.

Bathrooms
Contaminant: Mold and mildew caused by excess moisture
Effects: Irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. What can you do? "Ventilation, ventilation, ventilation. It is definitely the key," EPA's Elissa Feldman told WTOP reporter Amy Morris.
On winter days when the weather is mild enough, do crack open the windows to let fresh air in.

Remove excess moisture by running a fan in the bathroom or stovetop.

Update on the Combating Autism Act

On August 3, the Combating Autism Act was passed in the Senate. Since this time, NAA has discussed and analyzed the bill with others in our community, giving special attention to the accompanying legislative history. We believe the CAA will make a positive difference for our children, and is worthy of our watchful support.

The significant funding for environmental research, the first acknowledgement by the federal government that environmental factors are related to the epidemic of neurological disorders among our children, is the most promising aspect of this legislation. Through the CAA legislative history, the $45 million designated for environmental research is now more clearly directed where we need it most: the impact of environmental factors upon our kids, including the risks posed by vaccines and thimerosal.

From the beginning of this process, there were three critical areas that we believed should benefit from this legislation:

- FUNDING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH

- TREATMENT

- GREATER RESEARCH OVERSIGHT FROM THE COMMUNITY

Dear Parents and Friends,

As you know, the Combating Autism Act (CAA) is now in the hands of House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton.  We want to pass along to you what we have learned about the House version of Senate bill 843 in recent weeks and where the bill stands now.

We do not support the legislation in its present form, although we are keeping a careful eye on developments as they unfold.  At this moment, we do not know the fate of the report language we recommended nearly two weeks ago to Rep. Barton.  These suggestions make a very strong statement on the role of vaccines/thimerosal in the development of autism, and provide a clear directive that research dollars go to the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

Those of us with the undersigned organizations who have been actively working on the CAA have combed through the current bill, dissected the language, and discussed the legislation in person with an equal number of Democrats and Republicans.

This past Thursday, several representatives of NAA and SafeMinds visited legislative offices on the Hill, meeting with eight offices, half Republican and half Democrat. We presented the current form of the bill to over 20 staffers on both sides of the aisle while seeking their input. We also spoke with Directors and Deputy Directors of NIMH, HHS and NIEHS to seek their input on the value of the bill as it now stands. As a result of these meetings and ongoing discussions, we offer the following observations of the bill as it now stands:

  • The environmental language is still in this bill. We are working to strengthen this area through the legislative report as we did with the Senate version of the bill.

  • Research topics in the House version were originally to have been narrowed down to four broad categories.  We were able to get the more detailed list back into the bill which now includes a directive for the following research topics:  pathology, developmental neurobiology, genetics, epigenetics, pharmacology, nutrition, immunology, neuroimmunology, neurobehavioral development, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and toxicology.  The bill states that “Such research shall investigate the cause (including possible environmental causes), diagnosis or rule out, early detection, prevention, services, supports, intervention, and treatment of autism spectrum disorder.”

  • Rep. Barton’s version of the bill gives oversight of the strategic plan to the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC), rather than leaving it in the hands of the NIH.  This is an improvement over the passed Senate version of the bill, potentially allowing for more input and oversight of the plan from the autism/mercury community.

  • So far, the bill has no language that would violate the rights of parents and children, and we have remained actively involved to prevent such language.

  • The Senate version of the bill including the Report Language and Colloquy directing $45 million to NIEHS for research including studies on vaccines and their components doesn’t go away. It becomes part of the legislative history package that is delivered to Appropriations Committee should the bill pass. The environmental directives in the Senate version will weigh strongly as the committee appropriates the money to NIH divisions (including NIEHS). Our hope is to strengthen the Senate directive by including an environmental statement from Barton.

Dismissing this current bill in the hope of gaining a new bill under the Democratic leadership is something we have considered, and is still an option.  We are discussing this avenue with other organizations and legislative offices. Some pitfalls with this action include a likely delay in any re-writing of this bill. We expect the new leadership will be bombarded in January by proponents of other issues more likely to take hold under Democratic control, therefore slowing down the process across the board. Our Democratic contacts on the Hill have confirmed this.

Additionally, a Democratic Congress alone does not ensure that stronger vaccine/thimerosal language will become a reality. While the ties to the pharmaceutical industry may not be as strong as on the other side of the aisle, the Democrats include powerful and vocal advocates of vaccines in general who may try to circumvent any autism-related legislative language that includes references to vaccines.

Our chief concern is that if all of the environmentally-focused organizations were to walk away from the table now, unfavorable provisions could possibly be attached and we could lose the ability to hold on to the important provisions we have gained. We cannot allow that to happen in a bill that may pass with or without input from autism/mercury groups.  We believe that continued representation by our community is necessary in any legislative issues that involve our children, and will only support this legislation if the environmental criteria pertaining to vaccine/thimerosal research is met.

Based on everything above and what we know at this point in time, we remain cautiously optimistic about the bill and feel we are making the wisest decision for our children by staying involved with the process.

With the House now out of session until December 4, we don’t expect further official activity until after that time.  We will continue to keep you informed of any new developments regarding this legislation.

Sincerely,

The National Autism Association

Dr. Bernard Rimland

The National Autism Association joins countless parents and friends worldwide in mourning the death of a beloved leader and friend, Dr. Bernard Rimland. We had the honor of working with Dr. Rimland as a member of our advisory board, and are grateful beyond measure for all we have learned from him. Charting a new course in society’s understanding of autism, Dr. Rimland continued to lead this course throughout his life. His work to expose the myth of the “refrigerator mother” made it possible for scientists and families to advance beyond a world of stereotypes and predictions of bleak outcomes, to one of hope and healing.

The hope Dr. Rimland inspired in all who are touched by autism has led to an enlightened age of research and treatments for all diagnosed with what once was thought incurable. His steadfast drive to look beyond subjective psychological labels and into biological causes of autism were revolutionary, leading to the recovery of children that mainstream medicine had written off as forever lost to the mysterious world of autism.

Dr. Rimland’s foresight and determination have replaced mystery with treatment, despair with hope, and resignation with advocacy. The memory of his pioneering spirit will continue to light our way with hope for all the children and families affected by autism.

Think Autism. Think Cure.

This is a beautifull letter of tribute to Dr Rimland.. For privacy reasons I will not put the name of the parent who wrote this here from another message board.. But my children are on the supplements as well.

And it seems this child doesn't cover his ears much or at all from sound anymore... That symptom is improved....

Heres the letter...

Dr. Rimland has sadly passed away

There are so many good people out there who are researching, testing and contributing to help our children with autism.

Words cannot express my gratitude for Dr. Rimland's contribution to all who have children with autism.  I'm thankful that he had a heart to help us parents find answers to helping our children recover.  My son has accomplished so much over the last 3 and half years.  To have my son be able to relate to me, gaze into my eyes and enjoy being held is one very much appreciated part of his recovery.

Thanks to Dr. Rimlands research, my son can learn without a lot of repetition, he can look at a TV screen, where in the beginning before the dietary and supplements he wasn't able to look at the screen.  He doesn't cover his ears when the VCR is running a tape.  (even with no volume on the tv he covered his ears when a tape was sighlently running in the VCR.)  He no longer sweats oddly in the back of his neck, before biomedical treatment he used to sweat exessively in the back of his neck, where his hair was wet much of the time.  He used to have an odd smell coming from his ears that is no longer there.  These are biomedical evidence of recovery.  My heart goes out to Dr. Rimland and his family, friends and everyone who is saddened by his passing.  We will always remember his great contribution to the autism community.  Thanks to him there are many more hearts willing to keep moving forward continuing research and helping all who seek recovery through biomedical interventions.

Yours Most Truly,

The following letter has been sent to Chairman Barton in an effort to reiterate the need for the mandate of...

specific environmental research in the Combating Autism Act.

November 29, 2006

The Honorable Joe Barton
2109 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-4306

Re: Combating Autism Act: New Study Supports the Need for Urgent Action.

Dear Chairman Barton,

Thank you for your ongoing efforts to complete work on the Combating Autism Act before the end of the current session.  Attached please find a pre-publication release from a group at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center that supports the urgent need for a significant increase in funding for research on the role of environmental factors (including vaccines) in causing autism spectrum disorder (ASD): “Evidence of Toxicity, Oxidative Stress, and Neuronal Insult in Autism” (Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part B, 9:985-999 (2006)).

We ask that your bill include (1) a specific authorization to NIEHS (leaving centers a matter of discretion); (2) the Autism Advisory Board (to provide a more hands-on tool for community and researcher feedback and recommendations to ensure the most useful and strategic research), and (3) a subject matter mandate that research topics specifically include vaccines, other biologics, and their preservatives.  These latter two items were addressed in the Senate report and colloquy but are of such importance that they should be included in the statute itself.  We also urge adoption of the floor statement submitted on behalf of the community two weeks ago, a copy of which is also attached for your convenience.

            S. 843 authorized $45 million over five years for Centers of Excellence in Environmental Health and Autism.  The bill was the product of months of detailed negotiations and compromises involving dozens of organizations in the ASD community, federal agencies, and a lot of hard work by Senate staff.  The specific authorization reflected the need for a significant increase in funding for environmental research for two simple reasons.

First, the nation is confronting with the leading edge of a costly and debilitating ASD epidemic (1:166 affected children).  As with any epidemic, while there may be underlying genetic susceptibilities, there must be an environmental cause (virus, fungus, heavy metals, pollutants, etc.).  Once the cause is discovered, immediate steps can be taken to prevent new cases and abate the epidemic.

Second, as is the case with lead poisoning, many cancers, and several other chronic disorders, knowledge of the environmental cause or triggers leads directly to effective treatments.  These will provide those with ASD the best possible quality of life and the ability to make the greatest possible contributions to society.

Even with the more comprehensive list of subject matter topics for research focusing on the cause, prevention, and treatment for ASD which you have included in your draft, whether the research in fact gets done depends on the money actually spent.  We recognize that as an authorizing bill this is just the first step, and that the ultimate research agenda depends on appropriations and discretionary decisions.  However, clear Congressional direction at the authorizing stage will give the community an important tool, and Congress a point of reference for oversight, to work with the appropriations committees and the administration to implement the needed research agenda.

The federal officials most responsible for funding research into the cause and treatment for ASD provide the best – and frankly scariest – justification for a Congressionally mandated significant increase in funding, accountability, and oversight.  CDC Director Dr. Gerberding was recently quoted in a November 22 UPI story (“Autism Picture Still Incomplete”): “We just simply don’t have answers to the cause of this disorder or the disorders that fall into the autism spectrum, . . . we don’t have a complete picture of the scope of the problem.”  NIMH Director Insel was quoted in the same article: “We don’t really understand that whole landscape very well, . . . There's just a whole series of questions that we need to begin to define answers to much more precisely.”  “Ironically,” Insel admitted, “this is such a high priority for the National Institutes of Health -- and we have a large hospital and a huge clinic, with 18,000 people here in Bethesda -- (but) there has not been an autism program here until now. . . . As it is, autism has arrived at the stage where polio stood in the mid-1950s.”  Dr. Gerberding conceded in an earlier article (“Autism Research Stance Shifting?): “"When you're dealing with a problem as complicated as this one and as important to so many children and so many families across the United States, we have a responsibility to be open to any and all hypotheses.”  Exactly so, but Congress must direct, appropriate, and oversee funding to make sure that no stone is left unturned.

Solutions to the many ASD puzzles must be based upon sound science.  But the urgency of the need coupled with a lackluster track record of NIH discretionary decisions underfunding needed research in the past demands more active Congressional direction and oversight.  We fully support your overall NIH initiative for improved transparency and accountability, and want these principles applied against the ASD epidemic immediately.

The enclosed critical review article, from Congressman Barton’s own district – the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, provides an excellent roadmap and summary of recent research, much of it privately funded, on the environmental causes and the various biological dysfunctions associated with ASD.  The existence of an epidemic indicates environmental causation:

The increase in public awareness and broadening of the criteria may be possible contributing factors; however, the substantial increase in the rate of autism revealed by epidemiological studies and government reports implicates the importance of external or environmental factors that may be changing (USDE, 2003; Chakrabarti and Fombonne, 2001; Palmer et al., 2006).

Several environment-based mechanisms of causation are set forth:

Many theories were postulated regarding the underlying cause of autism. For example, autism was implicated to be related to the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (Wakefield et al., 1998, 2000; Wakefield, 2003); mercury in vaccines (Bernard et al., 2002; McGinnis, 2001); immune system dysfunction (Cohly and Panja, 2005; Warren et al., 1990, 1992, 1995; Singh et al., 1993; Weizman et al., 1982); fungal infection (Shaw et al., 1994; Shaw, 1996), toxicity (McFadden, 1996); metabolic abnormalities (Waring and Klovrza, 2000; Waring and O’Reilly, 1990; Alberti et al., 1999); and “leaky gut syndrome”(Vantrappen and Geboes, 1993). Most recently, studies have suggested that decreased glutathione levels and increased oxidative stress may play a role in the pathology (James et al., 2004). Which of the many theories may be correct and/or how the various theories may fit together remains unclear. It is important to note that these theories are based on small studies and much more research is needed.

But this orchard of low-hanging fruit will not get picked without a clear authorization from Congress.

The review cites several studies demonstrating that children with ASD have difficulty eliminating metals including mercury from vaccines and the environment.  The review cites reports from the “real world” of families coping with ASD:

The Autism Research Institute collected data from over 22,300 parents of children with autism on the behavioral effects of biomedical interventions. The survey includes a list of 45 medications, 23 non-drug supplements or biomedical treatments, and 9 special diets. The parents were asked to rate the treatment on a 6-point scale. Of these 77 choices, parents rated chelation therapy (or the removal of heavy metals) as the highest. Seventy-six% of parents said that their child “got better” on this treatment. The next most effective treatment was a gluten and casein free diet at 65% (ARI, 2006).

Yet NIH has only recently announced but not yet begun a clinical trial of chelation that has been used by the few families that can afford it for years.

The article’s conclusion offers an ominous warning:

The evidence presented in this article suggests that some of these children may be experiencing neuronal cell damage sometime after birth as result of insult.  The evidence also suggests that these children may be selectively vulnerable to the impact from external or environmental factors.  Some children with autism may be like the canary in the coal mine, exposing policy and/or environmental issues that need to be addressed.

We hope that Congress will be able to say that it has done everything possible to stop and treat this epidemic.

The following organizations represent a broad range of families, advocates, and researchers involved with ASD.  We appreciate your efforts and look forward to working with you to pass – and implement – a law that will truly make a meaningful difference for those with ASD and their families.

Sincerely,

Combating Autism Act Passes House of Representatives By Two-Thirds Majority
Advocacy Groups Call Passage a Landmark Event for Investigation of Environmental Factors in Autism

Washington, DC -  The National Autism Association (NAA) and SafeMinds today are calling the passage of the Combating Autism Act an important step forward for the one in 166 children now diagnosed with autism.  The two groups have been involved for the past year and a half with the legislative process to ensure that three main concerns were addressed in the bill:

  • Research provisions for investigating the link between environmental factors and the development of autism.
  • Greater research oversight from the autism community
  • Treatment of those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.

In the report language accompanying the bill, Congressman Joe Barton stated, “..the legislation rightfully calls for renewed efforts to study all possible causes of autism—including vaccines and other environmental causes.” Barton also states, “..these provisions will insure continuation and intensification of crucial research at NIEHS so that it is able to conduct all necessary research to determine the environmental factors in autism.”

“For the first time, we now have acknowledgement from the federal government that factors such as mercury from vaccines may play a role in the development of autism,” commented Laura Bono, NAA board member and mother of a son diagnosed with autism and mercury toxicity.  “This is the most promising area of research for our children, and we now have a clear directive that this will be investigated by the National Institutes of Health. Vaccines and their toxic components can no longer be ignored by our government as causative factors in autism.”

The urgency of creating a solid program of environmental investigation has been made particularly clear by Don and Deirdre Imus.  “With the huge rise over the past 18 years in neurological disorders among the children of this country, we can’t responsibly write the numbers off as ‘better diagnosing,’” according to Deirdre Imus, president and founder of the Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology.  “The health outcomes of environmental insults such as the injection of mercury through vaccines must be thoroughly investigated. Clearly, the toll taken upon human health by such toxins is of paramount concern, and must be addressed proactively.”

Additionally, the bill expands the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) to include representation from additional members of the autism community in an effort to strengthen research oversight, and addresses treatment options for those affected by autism.  “Rather than merely counting the children diagnosed with autism, we now have government confirmation that autism is a national emergency that can and should be treated,” according to SafeMinds President Lyn Redwood. “This reaffirms our long-standing position that there is hope for all families affected by autism.”

The authorizations included in the bill must now gain funding through the appropriations committee.  While the advocacy organizations expressed disappointment at the elimination of a $45 million earmark to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in the senate version of the bill, they are gearing up to make sure the environmental provisions become a reality through adequate funding to NIEHS as the legislative reports of both the Senate and the House have directed.

The Age of Autism: 'Problems' in CDC data
By DAN OLMSTED
UPI Senior Editor

WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- For three years, the CDC has used a study conducted on its own Vaccine Safety Datalink to reassure parents that mercury in vaccines does not cause autism. Now a panel of government-appointed experts says there are "serious problems" with exactly the approach the CDC took.

"I think what we're saying is that (study) wasn't the last word and that things need to be looked at again and perhaps with different methodology," chairwoman Irva Hertz-Picciotto told Age of Autism, which obtained a copy of the panel's report.

Critics said that renders reassurances about the mercury preservative, called thimerosal, unconvincing.

"How can health authorities, with a straight face, claim they have any evidence proving no connection after this report?" asked J.B. Handley, co-founder of Generation Rescue, an advocacy group that believes autism is essentially mercury poisoning by another name.

"This is analogous to our government not finding WMD in Iraq after reassuring the world they would. It's a loss of credibility, and we are back at square one."

The study -- often called the Verstraeten study for its principal author, Dr. Thomas Verstraeten -- used the Vaccine Safety Datalink maintained by the CDC to extract information from records kept by three health maintenance organizations. On its Web site, the CDC says: "(T)he results from this study suggest there is not a 'cause and effect' relationship between thimerosal and autism or ADD (attention deficit disorders)."

But the database has weaknesses -- including different ways of diagnosing autism at different HMOs -- that make it hard to draw broad conclusions, the experts said.

"The panel identified several serious problems that were judged to reduce the usefulness of an ecologic study design using the VSD to address the potential association between thimerosal and the risk" of autism, according to the report. An ecologic study -- analyzing groups rather than individuals -- was the approach the CDC used.

"We actually just got the report and haven't had a chance to assess it," CDC spokesman Glen Nowak said Monday. "Our Office of Science will be working with our Immunization Safety Office in terms of where and how this fits into our research agenda. We've got a couple of other studies under way."

Nowak said that the agency is working to eliminate all remaining thimerosal-containing shots as soon as possible, "so it wouldn't change where we want to go there, either."

He added that limitations of the study were acknowledged by Verstraeten -- who subsequently said its findings were "neutral" and required follow-up. Nowak said several studies support the safety of thimerosal, and he noted the expert panel suggested other ways to look for a possible connection using the database, including comparisons of siblings of those diagnosed with autism.

The panel was convened last May at Congress's request by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health. Congress wanted an independent opinion about whether the CDC's Vaccine Safety Datalink could be used to compare autism rates and vaccine mercury before and after thimerosal was phased out beginning in 1999.

That wouldn't work, the panel said, partly because of changes over time, but also because of problems with the data.

"I think there's more work to be done," said Hertz-Picciotto, a professor in the Department of Public Health at the University of California-Davis School of Medicine. She added it's unlikely that autism rates will decline significantly anytime soon.

"It's an 'open question' whether anything about vaccines -- timing, dose, preservative -- is related to the rise in diagnoses," she said.

The study was one of five key epidemiological studies cited by the prestigious Institute of Medicine when it concluded in 2004 that the evidence is against a link between thimerosal and autism.

But Hertz-Picciotto said several of those studies had more problems than the one conducted with CDC data.

"Some studies are stronger than others. The Verstraeten study was an improvement on other studies including the two in Denmark, both of which had serious weaknesses in their designs that limit what we can learn from them," she said.

David Kirby, author of the book "Evidence of Harm" on the controversy over thimerosal and autism, said the Institute of Medicine report -- intended to bring the mercury-autism debate to a close -- is on shaky ground as well.

"This is a strong blow at the very foundation of the 2004 IOM report, which builds its conclusion against causation largely on this (CDC vaccine safety) database.

"I would also point out that all the weaknesses cited by the NIH (expert panel) were highlighted long ago by members of SafeMinds," a group that opposes mercury in medicine.

Kirby said that in 1999, while the CDC's research was under way, SafeMinds' Lyn Redwood met with Verstraeten and raised the same issues: "under-ascertainment of cases, misreporting of data, ignoring prenatal exposure and a 25 percent exclusion rate" of children listed in the databases.

Kirby predicted the Institute of Medicine will now face increased pressure to take a fresh look at thimerosal and autism.

The expert panel's Hertz-Picciotto said research into autism has barely begun.

"We know there's a major genetic component to autism, but genes cannot explain a rise over a short time period of a few decades," she said.

"We also know that environment plays a significant part, and the scientific community is just beginning to search for what those factors and exposures are."

DOUG FLUTIE, JR. FOUNDATION AND SPEEDWAY CHILDREN’S CHARITIES GRANT NAA $30,000 for BURBACHER/CHARLESTON STUDY
Funds to support research on effects to the brain following mercury exposure

December 19, 2006

Nixa, MO – The National Autism Association (NAA) announced today the receipt of two grants for the Burbacher/Charleston study into the effects of mercury exposure in the brain. The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, Inc. awarded a $20,000 grant, along with 25 other grants to organizations totaling over $357,000. Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) of Concord, NC, will also support the research with a $10,000 grant from its national charitable funding program. SCC awarded more than $2.8 million to over 470 organizations in 2006.

The mercury study’s primary investigator is Dr. Thomas Burbacher, a University of Washington researcher. Burbacher’s earlier research found that exposure to Thimerosal, the ethylmercury-based vaccine preservative, resulted in inorganic mercury deposits in the brain that were twice the amount of those following exposure to equal amounts of methyl mercury, the type commonly found in fish. Previous research has documented that inorganic mercury is associated with a neuro-inflammatory process, recently documented to also occur in the brains of children diagnosed with autism. Inorganic mercury has no discernable half-life and, once trapped in the brain, continues to damage brain cells.

NAA has been assisting in funding the ongoing Burbacher research since 2005. “Continuing this research will provide even more important clues into the neurological effects mercury has upon our children, which we hope will lead to better treatments and even a cure,” said NAA board member Laura Bono. “We’re extremely grateful to the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation and Speedway Children’s Charities for these wonderful grants.”

"As parents of a child with autism, we are concerned about the possible correlation between mercury and autism and are pleased to see NAA continuing to support this very important research that may help resolve the mercury issue," commented Doug and Laurie Flutie.

"SCC is proud to award the NAA a grant to enhance its Burbacher/Charleston research study," said General Thomas Sadler, Executive director of SCC. "I hope these funds will help them come closer to finding a cure and continue to help the children affected by autism."

Abnormal Methylation... Methylation is a chemical process

in which genes are " turned on " of  " turned off ", and

alterrations in methylation affect all bodily processes

including neurologic and immune function.

Abnormal Glutathioline Metabolism... Glutathoine is a crucial antioxadant

-- a substance needed to protect the body against the effects of heavy

metals and other toxins......

A deficit of glutathione leads to oxidative stress....

in which rogue molecules called " free radicals " damage cells...

Excessive free radical damage can lead to abnormal development

and function of brain cells, gut muscosal cells and immune cells,

which are often impared in autistic children.....

Dear NAA Members, Families and Friends;

All of us at The National Autism Association would like to take this opportunity to thank our members, our community, our supporters, and friends for your help in making 2006 a successful year in the fight against autism.

In December 2005, we lost founding board member, dear friend and fearless autism advocate, Liz Birt. Her spirit continues to inspire us everyday. We’re 100% certain she has been standing alongside us throughout this past year. This time of year is often referred to as the Season of Giving.  It's become true for our community through a new fund established by a special friend to not only our organization, but to all families dealing with the autism diagnosis of a loved one. The generous benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has created the Liz Birt Hope for the Holidays Fund to provide $1,000 each December for the next five years to families that are in dire need of financial assistance.  We think this is a beautiful tribute to Liz, and one that she would enthusiastically embrace.  We hold in our hearts endless gratitude and admiration for Liz and the creator of this fund in her honor.

In 2006, we were able to contribute nearly $30,000 to needy families affected by autism through our Helping Hand Fund. With your generous donations, many autistic children were helped with biomedical interventions and therapies.

Also with your phone calls and letters, the first-ever autism research legislation, the Combating Autism Bill was passed. With it, the environmental component to the autism epidemic was acknowledged and directives into critical areas of biomedical and toxicological research were outlined. We will continue to need your advocacy assistance in 2007 as the bill reaches the Appropriations Committee. It is our goal to have as much money allocated to environmental research as possible.

NAA, along with your help, has paid $33,500 of our $145,000 commitment to researcher Thomas Burbacher at the University of Washington for studies into the effects of mercury exposure upon the brain of infant primates. The results of these studies, due in the Fall of 2007, will help us better understand mercury poisoning in children and we hope will lead to successful treatments and a cure.

We are extremely grateful for the three grants awarded to NAA during these last few weeks of 2006.  The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation has granted nearly $15,000 to distribute our conference DVD collection to autism-related organizations around the country.  Two groups in each state will be given these DVD sets so they can share this valuable information with local families affected by autism.  Additionally, NAA received two generous grants to assist us in our continued funding of research into mercury’s effects on the brain: $10,000 was granted from Speedway Children’s Charities and $20,000 from the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation.

In August of 2006, we added an important position to our staff, Chapter Development Director, which was filled by Nancy Maddy of our home office in Nixa, Missouri.  Nancy has worked to form two new chapters in Cleveland and Boston, and is in the process of adding chapters in several locations including Chicago, Atlanta, central California, and Minnesota.

Also in 2006:

  • Our “All Access” Program allowed us to distribute 17 computers and three month’s Internet access to needy families so they can learn how to help their autistic child through research, biomedical interventions and advice from other parents.

  • An Environmental Autism Research Roadmap and Suggestions for NIH’s Autism Research Matrix were completed by SafeMinds and NAA as a result of our Environmental Factors in Neurodevelopmental Disorders Symposium held in August 2005. The papers were distributed to Congress and prominent scientists, and presented to the National Institutes of Health at the November 2006 Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC). Presenting the research regarding the link of environmental factors (including mercury) in the development of autism was a groundbreaking achievement for the autism community! NIH is finally acknowledging environmental triggers in the causation of the autism epidemic. Our presentation was well received by researchers and policy makers in attendance and we hope will lead to better-targeted studies at NIH to directly help our children.

  • We held our first “One in 166” Autism Walk in Boston, thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of Jean Whelan, founder and president of NAA’s Boston chapter.

  • A Golf Tournament for autism research was held at Summit Chase Country Club in Snellville, GA on October 30th under the direction of NAA Secretary Adrienne Rousseau.

  • We held our first Poker Tournament in Atlantic City, NJ on November 2nd, thanks to event organizer Amy Becker Clark.  Proceeds from this exciting event went to our research and Helping Hand funds.

  • We once again received an overwhelming response to our photo contest. Each and every photo submitted was wonderful, once again confirming that our children are  truly beautiful.  It was extremely difficult to select the finalists who light up the pages of our 2007 "Faces of Autism" calendar that is now available in our online store.  We thank all the families who shared their precious photos with us.

  • NAA presented our views on the Vaccine Safety Datalink CDC “Verstraeten” Study at Public Comment at a meeting at the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in May. In November, NIEHS released their paper regarding the viability of using the VSD in future research.

  • NAA represented our members during public comment at two meetings of the Advisory Council of Immunization Practices at the CDC. We are requesting mercury be immediately removed from all vaccines and that the effects of Thimerosal be addressed formally in upcoming ACIP agendas.

  • NAA was represented at the Neurotoxicology Conference in Little Rock, AR in September. By representing the autism community there, we hope that more toxicologists and other researchers will chose to study autism to better target treatments for our children.

Coming up in 2007:

  • NAA will work to make sure the money needed to fund the Combating Autism Act is appropriated, specifically the money we need designated to NIEHS.

  • We will introduce our newest program, Family First, designed to offer marital support to couples in the autism community.

  • NAA hopes to expand its Helping Hand Program so that more children in need can receive assistance.

  • Our second National Autism Conference that is shaping up to be even bigger and better than our first will be held November 9 – 11 in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • Jean Whelan is planning the 2nd “One in 166” Walk to be held in May, again in the Boston area.

  • NAA’s Third Annual Golf Tournament.

  • NAA’s Second Annual Poker Tournament.

  • NAA feels very strongly that autistic children’s biomedical and therapy interventions should be covered by insurance. So far, this has been an uphill battle fought mainly by overworked families and on a case-by-case basis. But there is strength in numbers! NAA wants to unify the community behind an effort to include this vital help to families in a new Federal Autism Services Bill that we will be working on. We have already had several meetings with Capitol Hill staff regarding this much-needed legislation and will provide updates as we have them on our advocacy efforts.

  • An Autism Omnibus Hearing is scheduled in Washington, DC in June regarding the thousands of cases in the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. Families of suffering children have waited years for this hearing. NAA will be present providing you with news as it occurs on this very important event.

  • More state chapters will be added with your help.

Your continued support will help us reach our 2007 goals. Many donations are being made in honor of individuals with autism, which is a nice idea for family members and friends on behalf of your child.  If you or your loved ones wish to make a contribution before 12/31/06 to receive a tax deduction this coming April, please click here.  (http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/proddetail.php?prod=Donation)

Again, thank you for such a wonderful year. You have certainly proven that when we work together, anything’s possible.

As we look to 2007, let us vow to make it an even better year of successful advocacy, on-going research to help our children and giving to families in need.

Sincerely,

Yes.. Bowel Problems.. I know that one..

I had a baby with severe bowel problems that I had too supository for along time as she could NOT pass her huge bowel movements without it..

I brought her in to her doctor who told me to use baby supositories..

She was in constant pain... Colicky....

Though I believe it had to do with their baby vaccinations

looking back on it all.

And they did not have the rotavirus vaccine... I'm so glad they didn't...

On top of it all....

She's fine now in that bowel department though...

I'm so glad ...

But my other child has problems too and I just wonder...

What else did I not know back then about it all..

It just burns me up inside....

Bowel Obstruction...

On July 15, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) halted the use of the oral rotavirus vaccine, which is given to infants to prevent one of the major causes of diarrhea, after reports that the vaccine caused a bowel obstruction in some infants that required surgery to repair.

The bowel obstruction, called intussusception, results when one portion of the bowel slides inward, like a telescope, into another part of the bowel and causes blockage. A previously healthy infant suddenly screams in paroxysms of pain.

In its initial trial, the rotavirus vaccine appeared to cause intussusception at 30 times the average rate, but the government pretended that those injuries were insignificant. Instead of testing further, the CDC and the vaccine manufacturer subjected babies to more than a million doses of this unnecessary, expensive, and inadequately tested vaccine.

Oh... They have moved to a new web site address...

The Pink Disease support board... The link above on that pink disease site no longer is active... I didn't know that for I have not been there for awhile...

Sorry..

An information gathering exercise by the Pink Disease Support Group has revealed a higher than average incidence auto-immune disorders, Bronchiectasis, Solar Urticaria, chemical sensitivities, allergies, eye and mouth problems, infertility, co-ordination difficulties, poor health, and a proneness to emotional and psychiatric disorders.

http://www.pinkdisease.org/

Also on that site how to get mercury out...

There are a number of different methods for removing mercury from the body. These include medical chelation via the use of prescribed drugs; the use of vitamins, minerals and nutrients; dietary means; homoeopathy; and amalgam removal..

Plus....

Baffled doctors put forward all sorts of theories as to its cause, from light sensitivities, allergies, viruses, nutritional deficiencies and infectious agents. The story behind the discovery of the cause of Pink Disease and the banning of the teething powders is one of the great medical detective stories of all time.

Plus....

Not all cases of Pink Disease are caused by teething powders; some babies were too young to have been teething and received the mercury in other forms, from the mother's diet to environmental factors.

Plus....

I've been to doctors for many complaints over the years and they've never told me that Pink Disease in fact is mercury poisoning...

Plus....

One of the reasons why there were so many theories about what caused Pink Disease was that the symptoms of the disease were so diverse and were similar to the symptoms that could be caused by various infections, vitamin deficiencies, poisoning and so forth.

Plus....

Mercury was in very common use for medicinal purposes up until the 1850's and it's been suggested that if any doctor had seen a baby with Pink Disease up until that time, they would have recognised the symptoms of mercury poisoning immediately because the symptoms of mercury poisoning were well known then.

Plus....

Dr. H. Swift, of Adelaide, first recognised Pink Disease when he was a physician at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London in 1885 and he described the disease at the Australasian Medical Congress in 1914, calling it "erythroedema".

Plus....

The symptoms of Pink Disease were well described by the early 1920's so the search for the cause began in earnest.

Plus.....

The most common KNOWN cause of Pink Disease was mercury containing teething powders. In the English speaking Western World, the use of mercury in teething powders was banned in the 1950's. There were, and still are, numerous other household, industrial, natural, agricultural and medical sources of mercury in the environment.

Plus....

The breakthrough was published in The Lancet in 1949. By 1951 there were many confirmations of exposure to mercury of the sick children, but there were also many sceptics and strong opposition from the manufacturers of the powders.

SafeMinds
a website covering autism INCLUDING mercury research
URL: http://www.safeminds.org/

Also on Pink Disease information from the Pink Disease site.....

It's generally accepted that exposure to mercury was the cause of Pink Disease ALONG with some other predisposing factor, such as hypersensitivity to mercury, a molecular malfunction, immaturity or malfunction of adrenal medulla, or prior illness.

The most common cause of mercury exposure for babies in the English speaking Western World, up until the late 1950's, was from certain brands of teething powders. Teething powders were also known as soothing powders. It is estimated that only 1 in 500 babies given teething powders got Pink Disease.

Pink Disease occurred in older children in Europe because the most common cause was worming preparations containing mercury.

In continental Europe, calomel was used in worming medicine given to children but teething powders were not used; hence the older age of the children afflicted.

The mothers and other care-givers of babies with Pink Disease suffered severe exhaustion from lack of sleep, severe stress and loss of weight. Family life was generally disrupted by the baby's constant crying.

In Britain, doctors were reporting that 61% of children who died were under 1 year of age. The peak danger period seemed to be between six months and two years. Yet in continental Europe, the victims were often older, aged up to 10 years. Southern states in America were more affected than northern states.

Since mercury poisoning can cause blood disorders such as anaemia, another theory was that Pink Disease was caused by a vitamin deficiency - particularly of the B-Group vitamins. This theory was discarded because most the children who had Pink Disease were well fed and well cared for children. Children in countries with a low standard of living, where deficiency diseases were more common, did not get Pink Disease.

Two theories are discussed in "The Causes of Pink Disease". They are Warkany's and Hubbard's mercury theory that relates to what "caused" Pink Disease, and Cheek's and Hicks' theory which relates to the physiology of Pink Disease. Both the theories and methods of studying them had problems but fortunately, fate stepped in and proved that mercury was the catalyst for PD. Unfortunately, this meant that all research into the physiology of the Disease and the long-term side effects virtually ceased.

A major flaw in Dr. Warkany's experimental method was not noticed immediately. In different areas, mercury exposure is different. Some areas used mercury teething powders. Other areas had a lot of mercury because of industrial or agricultural use. Warkany's control group came from Cincinatti where mercury was not freely used and therefore significant levels of mercury in the urine would be unlikely. His Pink Disease samples came from areas where mercury use was common.

National Autism Association Announces American Legion Child Welfare Grant for Autism Outreach
Applications now being accepted from autism groups nationwide to receive National Autism Conference DVD sets

Nixa, MO - The National Autism Association (NAA) today announced its receipt of a grant from the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation (CWF) to disseminate DVD sets of complete presentations from NAA’s first National Autism Conference to two autism-related organizations in every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.  The conference, held in late 2005, consisted of 40 presentations from renowned autism experts in fields ranging from cutting-edge scientific research to getting the most out of Individualized Education Plans.

The organizations selected as recipients will submit an explanation of how they intend to use the DVD’s, agree to track usage, and submit a usage report to NAA at year’s end. “We are very happy to make this wealth of valuable information more widely available,” said NAA board chair Claire Bothwell.  “The generosity of the Child Welfare Foundation will help educate families around the country on the best treatments, therapies, and educational strategies available for the one in 166 children now affected by autism.”

The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation was founded in 1954 to provide other nonprofit organizations with a means to educate the public about the needs of children across this nation.  To date, they have provided over $8 million to help children in need in this country.  According to CWF Board President Dennis R. Boland, “The National Autism Association DVD sets will provide current, up to date information on autism treatment and management to 110 autism organizations throughout the country; touching the lives of thousands of children.  The Foundation is pleased to be a part of this worthwhile project.”

Autism-related organizations can complete applications online at http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/htmlpages/dvdapplication.htm  for submission to NAA no later than February 28, 2007.  Applicants will be notified by March 31 if they are selected to receive DVD sets to share with local parents and caregivers.  Final decisions will be based on the ability of the organizations selected to provide access to the conference proceedings to local communities.

The Autism community has suffered a heartbreaking loss, the death of 5-year-old Daryl Gosein of New Jersey.  While visiting relatives in Florida, Daryl wandered to a nearby canal where he was found minutes later by his family.  On January 17th, Daryl would have celebrated his 6th birthday along with his twin brother, Dylan. Daryl's family has asked that we post this photo in remembrance of his upcoming birthday and that in lieu of flowers or gifts of sympathy, donations be sent to NAA in Daryl's honor.

http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/proddetail.php?prod=DarylGosein

Acknowledgments of every donation will be sent to the Gosein family - Daryl's parents, Kishore and Wendy, his sisters Nicole and Christine, and his brother, Dylan.

All of us at NAA extend our heartfelt sympathy to Daryl's family and our sincere appreciation for their desire to help other children and families during this most painful time.

The National Autism Association received a very special donation from eleven-year old Nolan Rodman on behalf of his cousin diagnosed with autism.

Rodman celebrated his 11th birthday in November, but instead of receiving gifts from birthday-party attendees, he requested they donate money to NAA. “Nolan wanted to donate money for Connor,” said mother Cindy Rodman.

Rodman is the nephew of NAA board member Lori McIlwain. McIlwain’s son Connor was diagnosed with autism in 2001. “Nolan is a very special boy,” McIlwain said. “He’d do anything to help his little cousin and those like him.”

NAA’s Executive Director Rita Shreffler was touched by the donations. “Not many children would give up their birthday presents,” she stated. “What a wonderful gift for Nolan to give.”

If you would like to make a donation towards NAA’s programs or the most up-to-date autism research, please click here, http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/products.php?cat=11 or mail contributions to:  NAA, 1330 W. Schatz Lane, Nixa, MO 65714.

Looking Back at 2006 with Gratitude From All of Us at NAA!

We recently sent out a letter highlighting all that we've accomplished together over the last year and our goals for 2007.   If you missed it, please click here:

There is No Autism Epidemic

By David Kirby
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/there-is-no-autism-epidem_b_37647.html

January 2, 2007

It's been nearly two years since the release of my book, "Evidence of Harm, Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic - A Medical Controversy," and I continue to be vilified by critics who insist that mercury does not cause autism, that autism is a stable genetic condition, and that it cannot be an "epidemic."

I am going to declare a New Year's truce, and announce that my critics are 100 percent correct.

This year, I hope we can ALL agree on one thing: There is no autism epidemic.

Among my most spirited and articulate detractors is a group of adults with autism who belong to a movement that refers to itself as the "neurodiversity" community.

These adults argue passionately that autism is neither a disease nor a disorder, but rather a natural and special variation of the chance genetic imprint left upon human behavior. Most of them, I believe, have what science calls "Asperger's Syndrome," or very high functioning autism.

From their eloquent and well reasoned point of view, autism has no "cause," and it certainly requires no "cure." To suggest otherwise is to brand these adults with the stigma of disease and disability, which is patently absurd given their educational and intellectual achievements.

It's like saying that left-handers or gays are deviant and need treatment - something that reasonable people stopped doing years ago.

So maybe autism really is just an odd genetic peculiarity that yields atypical people whose own set of talents and gifts can lead to perfectly happy and fulfilled lives, with little or no dependence on others for their survival.

If that's the case, then autism has always been with us at some steady, but largely overlooked rate. Growing awareness and better diagnostics have certainly helped us identify and count more people with the condition, who might have been mislabeled as "quirky" or "nerdy" a decade ago.

But if that's autism, then the kids that I have met suffer from some other condition entirely. When I talk about "curing" autism, I am not talking about curing the "neurodiverse."

I am talking about kids who begin talking and then, suddenly, never say another word.

I'm talking about kids who may never learn to read, write, tie their shoes or fall in love.

I'm talking about kids who sometimes wail in torture at three in the morning because something inside them hurts like a burning coal, but they can't say what or where it is.

I'm talking about kids who can barely keep food in their inflamed, distressed guts, and when they do, it winds up in rivers of diarrhea or swirls of feces spread on a favorite carpet or pet (no one said this kind of "autism" was pretty).

I'm talking about kids who escape from their home in a blaze of alarms, only to be found hours later, freezing, alone and wandering the Interstate.

I'm talking about kids who have bitten their mother so hard and so often, they are on a first name basis at the emergency room.

I'm talking about kids who spin like fireworks until they fall and crack their heads, kids who will play with a pencil but not with their sister, kids who stare at nothing and scream at everything and don't even realize it when their dad comes home from work.

These are the kids I want to see cured. And I don't believe they have "autism."

Scientists tell us that 1-in-104 American boys are currently diagnosed with some form of autism spectrum disorder. But the mildest, "high functioning" forms of autism have seemingly little in common with the most severe or even moderate cases.

My hunch (and yes, that is all it is) is that most of these kids do not have "autism" at all, and it's probably time we started calling it something else.

American kids are in huge trouble. One in six has a learning disability. Asthma, diabetes, allergies and arthritis are ravaging their bodies in growing numbers. And little of this is due to "better diagnostics" or "greater awareness."

It can only be attributed to radical changes in our environment over the last 10-20 years. There is something, or more likely some things in our modern air, water, food and drugs that are making genetically susceptible children sick, and we need to find out what they are.

Mercury remains a logical candidate for contributing to "autism spectrum disorders," either alone or in combination with other environmental insults. Mercury exposure can kill brain cells. It can cause loss of speech and eye contact, digestive and immune dysfunction, social withdrawal and anxiety, and repetitive and self-injurious behaviors.

So maybe we should leave the autistics in peace and focus on these environmentally toxic kids and what it is that ails them.

Maybe what these kids have is not autism, but something like, say, "Environmentally-acquired Neuroimmune Disorder," which we could call E.N.D. (Great slogan: "Let's End E.N.D.).

Maybe that would explain why a recent CDC-funded study of the San Francisco Bay Area showed that kids with "autism" were 50% more likely to be born in neighborhoods with high levels of airborne toxins, especially mercury. If a second study underway in Baltimore yields similar data, it will be that much harder to defend the "better diagnosis" argument, (other studies have shown an association between autism rates and proximity to coal-fired power plants).

So maybe what we have here is just a semantic failure to communicate. Columbus thought he had met "Indians," and we only recently began to use the term "Native American."

Columbus was not in the Indies, mercury doesn't cause autism, and there is no autism epidemic.

I just read this report up above and it so true to me...

Both my autistic children are different it is not the same..

And genetic testing came out different as well..

One is higher functioning autism and has a great memory feature..

She memorizes books and information  and talks and reads and taught

herself to do so thru this memory feature..

And like the rainman though her memory is not that sharp in function.

She has to calm herself at times like the rainman does with the first on

base who's on second routine..

Except she will start pacing and singing though that is rare and mostly

a social gathering thing especially being around kids her age she may

feel uncomfortable with..

Her genes showed up like matching of genes with other autistic children.

But that doesn't mean because it did for her there wasen't a trigger or

enviromental factor that set theses genes off or caused these genes to be

different..

But my other child who is more severly autistic is the kind that was talked

about above.. The kind that doesn't talk that can bite or seems to be distress..

Her genes that were tested was not showing up in that fit

of catagory... With the the test of the certain amount of

genes they tested...

I believe that she has the same vunerablity to theses others factors

my other daughter had but even worse..

She was effected by it even worse as they are not twin twins but related

twins which means it is two seperate cases but related..

of childern who handle toxins in different ways..

I see it.. The parents that see this what he's talking about above..

Believe it and know it as he wrote above above..

And the terrible thing lately..

She has regressed but as this happened before in the past..

We hope she will improve overtime again..

She's the regressing kind..

My other child is not..

Why is this so if it's the same..

I don't believe it is.. Because my belief on what triggers the symptoms

of autism is what explains that to me..

Why one child would be effected more or in different ways then another.

The difference's in a child but the same trigger....

Thats what I believe because thats what I see....

Helping Hand...

NAA is pleased to announce that we are once again accepting grant applications for our Helping Hand Project.  This program provides financial assistance to help families in need pay for therapies and biomedical treatments for their children.  NAA is the only autism advocacy group directly helping families financially and we need your help!  Each year we are overwhelmed with applications.  In 2006 we were able to award 20 grants, paying for nutritional supplements, physician care, compounded prescription medications, therapies and more.  We hope to increase that number to at least 30 this year, but there are hundreds of families in desperate need.  With the lack of support and insurance coverage for children with autism, we have parents in this country who are struggling beyond imagination.  We recently awarded a grant to a single mom who had lost her home and was living in her car with her autistic son.

We are looking for corporate sponsors who are willing to commit to an annual or monthly donation for this program.  100% of all donations to the Helping Hand Project are tax deductible and will directly benefit families.  All sponsors will be recognized on the NAA website.  Please call Wendy Fournier at 877-622-2884 for more information.

If you are an individual who would like to help, you can make a one-time donation or pledge a monthly donation on your credit card by visiting our website or calling us at 866-622-6733.   Even a small amount of $5 or $10 per month would go a long way in expanding this program and reaching out to more families.  The Helping Hand Project is one of the most important things we do here at NAA.  Together, we can really make a difference in the lives of families who are struggling to help their children.

Here are some messages we've received from recent grant recipients.

Just when I was beginning to feel that I haven't done enough for my son, this serves as a reminder to me that I am trying my best and that there are organizations that are lending a helping hand such as the National Autism Association.  As a single mom, there is not enough income to go around for all the services he needs that insurance will not cover and every little bit helps and your organization was very generous!
-Debbie H.

Because of the grant, for the first time in my son's 14 years, this summer he was able to participate in a program that was specifically designed to help him with his developmental delays, and social skills that are part and parcel of Aspergers, PDD-NOS.  I only could wish the program was longer than the 5 weeks.  I am so grateful to have had this opportunity for him.  Being a single mom on a disability income, I cannot afford what he so desperately needs.  Without appropriate services, my child has little chance to become a functioning member of society and I fear for his future.
-Vivian M.

To make a monthly pledge, click here:

Please pass this email along to parents who could benefit from this program, as well as to individuals and business owners who might be willing to sponsor it.  Together, anything's possible.

Reminder:  Comments to NIH on Autism Research Matrix must be submitted by Tuesday. January 16th.

Forwarded from SafeMinds Newsletter
http://www.safeminds.org

Last year SafeMinds and the National Autism Association sponsored a two day symposium regarding the role of environmental factors in neurodevelopmental disorders, which was made possible by the generous support of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The symposium brought leading experts together from the fields of toxicology, environmental health science, neuroscience and clinical science and researchers to review new findings for the purpose of making recommendations regarding future research initiatives. The recommendations from these esteemed leaders were utilized in designing a roadmap for future research into the role of environmental factors in the pathogenesis of autism.

Findings from the symposium were presented to Dr. Tom Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental health (NIMH), the lead agency responsible for autism research at National Institutes of Health (NIH ) in August of this year. This presentation included a leveraged environmental research agenda for autism spectrum disorders and recommendations for revision to the NIH autism research matrix. At that time we submitted a request that our information be presented to the NIH Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) at their next meeting. Click here to read recommendations.

These efforts resulted in Dr. Jeff Bradstreet presenting “The Role of Environmental Factors in the Pathogenesis of Autism: Phenotypes, Lab Markers, Clinical Interventions and Suggested Areas for Research” to the IACC at their recent November 17th meeting . Please click here to view Dr. Bradstreet’s presentation.

Subsequently, NIMH convened a panel of experts to review the progress made to date on the autism research matrix on September 25th. The symposium findings, as well as our research recommendations, were distributed to all the panel members. There was consensus from the expert panel that there was insufficient attention given to role of the environment in autism in the first incarnation of the matrix. It was also noted by the panel that there were numerous areas suggesting the need for additional research, which included the role that vaccines and immunotoxic chemicals may play in autism.

Several new areas of investigation have been suggested into the role of envinronmental factors in autism and are included in the draft report of evaluation results. At their November 17th meeting, the IACC agreed to post the draft report of the evaluation results for public comment. Please click here to read the report.

It is important that our voices be heard. SafeMinds encourages everyone to read the draft report and submit comments to the IACC by January 16, 2007. Click here to submit comments

CONTROVERSIAL VACCINE PRESERVATIVE TO BE DISCUSSED AT UPCOMING CDC MEETING, SAYS NATIONAL AUTISM ASSOCIATION

Parents and Advocacy Groups request flu shots recommended for pregnant women, infants and children be mercury-free

Nixa, MO –  The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will meet in two weeks at the CDC in Atlanta. Thimerosal, a controversial mercury-based vaccine preservative still used in flu shots, is scheduled to be discussed on the morning of February 21st.

While thimerosal has been phased out of some vaccines, it is still present in flu shots recommended for pregnant women, infants and young children.  Environmental Protection Agency guidelines indicate that the 25 micrograms of mercury contained in flu shots is unsafe for anyone weighing less than 550 pounds.

Earlier this week, the CDC released a report citing 1 in 150 children are now diagnosed with autism—up from 1 in 166 just two years prior. Many parents and scientists believe the increased use of mercury-containing vaccines starting in the late 1980’s has led to the rise in cases.

“Children and fetuses are still being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin,” says father Christian McIlwain of Cary, North Carolina. “With the recently added recommendations that influenza vaccines be given to women during any stage of pregnancy and children from age six months and up, the amount of early-age thimerosal exposure through recommended vaccines has increased drastically in the last two years—it’s simply time for the committee to advise that only thimerosal-free vaccines be used for pregnant women and young children.”

Despite multiple requests by the research group SafeMinds and the National Autism Association, this is the first time ACIP has put thimerosal on the agenda in several years. Advocacy groups were told by the CDC that thimerosal would be discussed at the October 2006 ACIP meeting, but it was never officially assigned.

ACIP consists of 15 experts in fields associated with immunization that have been selected by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to provide advice on immunizations. It develops written recommendations for the routine administration of vaccines to the pediatric and adult populations, and is the only entity in the federal government that makes such recommendations.

Parents are urged to attend the ACIP meeting, or send letters to the committee via e-mail to naa@nationalautism.org

Parents can also register to attend the meeting by visiting http://www.cdc.gov/nip/acip/dates.htm.

Life University to host Test of Life Charity Rugby Tournament to Benefit the National Autism Association

MARIETTA, GA – Life University will be hosting the Test of Life Charity Tournament, which is a four-team Rugby tournament, on Feb. 24-25 to raise money for the National Autism Association. The National Autism Association’s mission is to educate and empower families affected by autism and other neurological disorders and to fund appropriate research efforts.

“The Rugby team put together this event because as members of this community, they seek to make a positive contribution to the lives of the people that they come in contact with,” Athletic Director John Barrett said.

The tournament features the Atlanta Renegades, Potomac Athletic Club from Washington DC, Charlotte Wolfhounds and Life University Running Eagles.

"Life University Rugby invites all to support us in our commitment to being dedicated players to our sport and our community. This tournament gives spectators an opportunity to support and see the most successful rugby teams in the South Eastern United States battle it out on the pitch for this worthy cause," said Scott Lawrence, Life University Rugby player.

In addition to all of the proceeds from the tournament going to the National Autism Association, several local businesses will be sponsoring the event including Atkins Park in Smyrna, Joel’s Tavern and Wal-Mart in Marietta.

“Community involvement is one of things that we believe is important in our athletic program,” Barrett commented. “Our connection to the community and the people in it are what make Life University and Life University athletics unique.”

CDC’s Vaccine Committee Whitewashed Toxic Vaccine Component, Says National Autism Association (NAA)

Vaccine discussion excluded peer-reviewed published research documenting harmful effects of the mercury preservative thimerosal

Atlanta, GA - Parents and health advocates are expressing outrage over the recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) that pregnant women, infants and children continue to be exposed to mercury contained in the flu vaccine despite recommendations from the Institute of Medicine that mercury not be injected into these sensitive populations since 2001.

Dr. Jay Lieberman was assigned to present on “Thimerosal, Reviewing the Evidence.” A plethora of peer-reviewed published data documenting the harmful effects of thimerosal on the immune, metabolic and nervous systems in humans and animals is widely available with a simple PubMed data search.  But none of this information was mentioned by Dr. Lieberman. Instead, the discussion centered on epidemiological studies which have been highly criticized due to their inability to identify any such harmful associations.  In fact, one such study presented by Dr. Lieberman was found by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in October of 2006 to contain several serious flaws that were “judged to reduce the usefulness of an ecologic study design using the VSD (Vaccine Safety Database) to address the potential association between thimerosal and the risk of Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

Dr. Lieberman has been a consultant to Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, and Sanofi-Pasteur and is on the speakers’ bureau for all three vaccine-makers, who have used, and currently use, thimerosal in their products.  “We have been very concerned about Dr. Lieberman’s conflicts of interest,” commented Executive Director Rita Shreffler of NAA.  Shreffler says that NAA requested that a counterpoint speaker without ties to drug companies be allowed to present current, peer-reviewed toxicological data and the request was denied. “To leave this presentation in the hands of those who have profited from, and continue to use thimerosal in some of their products is consistent with the CDC’s history of concealing the consequences of injecting mercury into humans,” said Shreffler.

While most routine childhood vaccines are currently available in mercury-free or reduced mercury versions, the majority of flu shots still contain 25 micrograms of mercury, an amount considered unsafe under government agency guidelines for anyone weighing less than 550 lbs.  The CDC now recommends flu shots for pregnant women and children ages six months through five years.  “It’s obvious this committee’s ties to the drug companies are dictating what will come to light regarding the use of mercury in vaccines,” said Claire Bothwell, NAA board chair.  “When it comes to discussing thimerosal, it’s hard to tell where the pharmaceutical industry leaves off and where the CDC begins.  The blurring of these lines is not in the best interests of public health.”
